Nia is combination of Dance, Martial Arts and Yoga. It is a fun, exhilarating yet relaxing workout set to funky, up-beat music that is done barefoot and suitable for anyone of any age, background and experience of movement. Nia came out of California and the fitness boom of the 1980′s when high impact aerobic classes were the trend. Debbie and Carlos Rosas (Nia’s creators) were teaching high impact cardio classes at their successful Aerobic studio in LA at the time when they discovered their own joints to be ceasing up and their injury levels getting increasingly high. They decided they needed to change something so they began to explore other movement forms – Jazz, Duncan and Modern Dance, Tae Kwando, Tai chi and Aikido, Yoga, Feldenkrais and the Alexander Technique. They combined elements of all these systems, set them to music took their shoes off to create less impact in the joints and Nia was born! So, come along and explore this interesting, diverse and fun movement system.
Melanie teaches Nia at Smile2Live she has an extensive background in dance, movement and healing. She grew up training in Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Tap and has since made it part of her life’s work to study different forms of dance and movement, see how much fun they can be and the healing effects they have on the body and overall sense of health and well-being. She had the opportunity to see this in action after being seriously ill diagnosed with cancer eight years ago and subsequently healing herself completely holistically. At Smile2Live she will be focusing on teaching The Nia Technique a movement form she discovered whilst living in California that blends Dance, Martial Arts and Yoga to funky, up-beat music creating a fun, exhilarating yet relaxing workout suitable for anyone of any age and experience in movement.
